THE ARGUMENTS AGAINST and FOR the Turin Shroud |
ON-LINE DISCUSSION about these ARGUMENTS |
S&V : paper against the TS The Mandylion of Edessa S&V - October 2005 - Page 8 Several old texts (the Doctrine of Addaï, which dates back to the IV century, the History of the image of Edessa, X century, etc.) try to reconstitute its historical course, starting from anecdotes or mentions about a portrait of Christ quoted here and there. But it is impossible to deduce from these writings that this "divine image" is well the funeral imprint of the Christ, nor it is that which appears in Lirey about 1357. Moreover the image of Edessa is described like reproducing the face of Christ and not his entire body. VSD - Page 26 According to Ian Wilson, the current shroud of Turin and the mandylion would have been one and even object, sometimes exposed in entirety, sometimes folded so as to let see only the face. This assumption was recently consolidated by an optical study of the linen cloth in low-angled light, which highlighted traces of foldings possibly corresponding to the face of the mandylion. |
